On Music
Mother: alors, ca va la classe de musique? (So, are your music classes going on all right?)
S. Mother, apart from teaching them singing, what else should I do?
Mother: Make them listen to good music, music which helps them to go within.
S. What music, Mother?
Mother: Take my organ music. Or...take any other good pieces of music...like the music of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart or ... Indian Ragas - they are very beautiful! I like them! (Pause) You have to choose carefully... You have to be very very careful about one thing - never allow the students to disrespect music because true music comes from a very high region. From their childhood the students must learn to respect music. From your side never, never present light music to your students. Never, never, never!
S. Douce Mere, what is light music?
Mother: The music which has no spiritual vibration. The music with those funny rhythms that excite the vital. You must avoid them totally.
(The Mother then looks at me for a long time)
S. Mere, how to get this spiritual vibration in music?
Mother: Aspire. Pray to the Divine.
S. Mere, I do not have any idea about the Divine. For me he lives in the seventh heaven. I cannot even imagine aspiring to him. (touching Her feet) I know only you Mere, only you. You are my all-in-all. You are my Divine. Pray, give me the experience of true music.
Mother: (smiling) I am not talking of the Divine who is in the seventh heaven. I am talking of the Supreme Divine who is in you. In you my dear child. Essaie d'avoir un contact avec Lui. Il est la. Il est la! (Try to establish contact with Him. He is there, He is there.)
Silently the Mother concentrates on my eyes. Silently, after receiving Her blessings, I leave Her room.
